How do I start a business in Stanford?
If a person wants to run a business out of their home, it will require permission from the Board of Adjustments, a division of Planning and Zoning.
The person must come before the Board, pay an advance fee, and then either they can notify all the neighbors, or the City can send certified letters, with return receipt, to the adjacent property owners.  The requester must pay for all expenses.  He must also post a notice in the yard, stating what they plan to do.  The neighbors have the right to come to a special called meeting and put in their input.  Based on the input, the Board will have 30 days following the meeting to decide yes or no.  Either way, the requester must pay all expenses.

If a person wants to open a business in an existing building, the area is checked for the Zone and then if all is well, an application can be filled out and the Privilege License purchased right then.

The County must be notified on all businesses starting in Stanford.

How do I get a Zone Change on my property?
If a person wants to change the ZONE of their property, they have an application to fill out, and it must come before the Planning and Zoning Commission.  There is an upfront fee that must be paid, and all expenses, which include a public hearing.  The adjacent property owners must be notified and a sign posted with the request.  Once the public hearing is held, the public has the right to question the land owner about how the property will be used.  A decision will be made within 30 days by the Planning and Zoning Commission, with a recommendation going to the Stanford City Council for an Ordinance.  That procedure takes two readings, usually one a month, and if passed by a roll call vote, becomes effective once it is published.

I want to add a garage to my house or turn an existing garage into a sunroom... How do I do this?
An application can be made with a drawing of what is planned, and turned into either the Chairman of the Zoning Commission or the Codes Enforcement Officer.  Once the details are discussed, then the permit will be issued at a small cost.
The County will issue a separate permit and do all inspections using their fee schedule.

I want to put a small storage building in my back yard; what are the rules?
Please make sure the building will not cover an existing storm drain and will be set back away from the property lines at least eight (8) feet.  Then contact the Chairman of the Zoning Commission or the Codes Enforcement Officer with a small drawing.  Once the details are discussed, then the permit will be issued at a small cost.
The County will issue a separate permit and do all inspections using their fee schedule.

I am an out of town contractor, doing a small job in Stanford, Do I need a permit?
Yes. You must ALWAYS register with the County, and if the job is located inside City Limits, then you must have an Occupational License and pay the occupational tax on any employee you have working in the City Limits.

I am thinking of having a yard sale, do I need a permit?
Yes.  The permit is $5.00 (five dollars) and is for only two consecutive days.  Three day sales are not allowed.  Signs must be taken down within 24 hours after the sale.  If you decide to have a sale without a permit, then you will be fined double.  It is best to get the permit before you have the sale.

The neighbors have let their grass grow and have a lot of junk in their yard, how can I get the City to clean up the mess?
You must file a written complaint, and it must be signed.  We will need the exact address of the property and the owner’s name, which can be found at the PVA office.  Then the report will be sent to the Codes Enforcement Officer and a notice will be sent to the offender.  They will be given five days from receipt to abate the nuisance or the City can take action at their expense.
Yards/ lots should be mowed at least four times a year and not grow above twelve (12) inches.

The Neighbors have added cattle/horses to their property, what can I do?
There are NO agricultural zones inside the City Limits, so if there have not been any farm animals on the property within the past year, they will not be allowed on the property now.
